Contractor Accommodation Near Yass | Motel Royal Tara

18 October 2026 · 7 min read

Construction and maintenance work around the Yass Valley rarely sits still. Crews move between residential jobs, commercial builds and infrastructure projects in the area, and the work often runs across weeks rather than days. That makes where you sleep a working decision, not an afterthought. A room that fits a ute and trailer, sits on the ground floor and puts a hot meal within walking distance saves time every single day of the job.

Motel Royal Tara is a 20-room country motel at 27 Stephens Street, Binalong, roughly 30 minutes from Yass on the Burley Griffin Way. We are a short detour off the Hume Highway, which suits crews travelling between Canberra, Yass and Goulburn who want one base for the length of a project instead of moving every second night.

Why the Yass Valley keeps crews busy

Yass sits within reach of a wide band of building activity. Trades and suppliers service residential and building and construction work across Canberra, Yass, Goulburn and the surrounding areas, so the same crew can be on a slab in one town and finishing a fitout in the next. Staying put and driving out each morning usually beats packing up and relocating mid-week.

The town also has steady demand of its own. Yass Hospital, a public hospital on Meehan Street, is one of the larger facilities in the district, and infrastructure projects in the area add to the flow of contractors and work vehicles through the region. Accommodation in Yass is a mix of motels, holiday rentals and monthly stays, and it fills quickly when several projects are running at once.

What matters in contractor accommodation near Yass

Work crews tend to judge accommodation on practical grounds rather than presentation. The list below covers the practical points crews care about most.

  • Parking that takes a ute, a trailer or a light commercial vehicle without a three-point turn at the end of a long day

  • Ground floor rooms, so tools, bags and paperwork go straight from the vehicle into the room

  • A kitchenette for an early breakfast, a late feed or a packed lunch before site

  • Reliable WiFi for rosters, dockets, quotes and messages home

  • Dinner available on site rather than a drive into town after a ten hour day

  • Check-in and check-out times that fit around shift patterns and travel time

Parking for work vehicles, trailers and utes

Cars parked at the door of the rooms at Motel Royal Tara in the evening

Every room at Motel Royal Tara has a private parking space at the door. There is room for trailers, utes and work vehicles, and the layout means you can load and unload directly outside your room instead of hauling gear across a car park. For crews arriving with a trailer, a box of tools or materials that need to stay close, that arrangement removes a daily headache.

All rooms are non-smoking, and every room has a front patio area where you can sit with a coffee and sort out the next day’s run sheet before turning in.

Ground floor rooms and early starts

All 20 rooms are on the ground floor. There are no stairs to negotiate with a swag of gear, a laptop bag and a tool belt at the end of a long shift. Each room has its own ensuite, reverse-cycle air conditioning, an electric blanket, a television, WiFi, a kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities, and an iron. Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order across longer stays, which matters when the same crew is booked in for a fortnight or more.

Check-in is from 1 pm and check-out is 10 am. If a crew is arriving late off a site or leaving before first light, it pays to mention it when booking so we can have the details sorted in advance.

Meals after a long day on site

Steak with mash and seasonal vegetables at the Motel Royal Tara restaurant

Our licensed and BYO restaurant serves steaks, burgers, pizza and Indian curries and biryanis. Dinner runs every day except Wednesday, which covers most working weeks without a drive into Yass at the end of the day. The restaurant is licensed, so a beer or a wine from the bar is an option, and BYO suits crews who prefer to bring their own.

Buffet breakfast runs from 7.30 am to 9.30 am by booking. For crews leaving before that, the kitchenette and tea and coffee facilities in each room cover an early start. More detail on both is on our dining page.

Booking several rooms for one crew

Multi-room bookings are welcome, and they work best when you call and talk through the job. We can note arrival times, rough numbers, dietary requirements for dinner and how many parking spaces you need, then hold the rooms you want. Rates depend on the length of stay and the number of rooms, so we quote on the job rather than from a set sheet.

Longer stays and regular crews are worth flagging at the time of booking. There is more on how we handle those on our corporate stays page, and our facilities page lists what is available on site. You can reach us on 02 6227 4310 or 0426 428 501, including by WhatsApp, or through the contact page.

Getting here from Yass and the Hume Highway

Binalong is about 30 minutes from Yass along the Burley Griffin Way. Coming off the Hume Highway, it is a short detour rather than a major diversion, which keeps the run to Yass, Goulburn and Canberra workable for a daily commute. The motel has been operating since 1986 and sits in the middle of the village, close to the village shops.

If you are weighing up whether to stay in Yass itself or a little further out, our accommodation near Yass page explains the distances and the trade-offs. Many crews find the quieter village setting easier to sleep in after a noisy day on a site, and the drive out each morning is straightforward.

What to confirm before you book

A quick conversation covers most of what a crew needs to know. It helps to have the following ready when you call.

  1. The number of people and how you want them split across rooms

  2. How many vehicles, and whether any are towing trailers or carrying loads

  3. Arrival and departure times, including any after-hours arrival

  4. The length of the stay, and whether it might extend

  5. Whether you want dinner booked in and any dietary requirements

Anything we cannot confirm at the time, we will check and come back to you before you commit. If a detail is not on our website, ring us and ask rather than assuming.
