The Quickest Stop: The Yass Service Centre
If all you need is fuel, a toilet and something fast, the highway service centre where Yass Valley Way meets the Hume is the easiest stop near Yass. It sits right at the interchange, so you are back on the highway within minutes, and it has a service station plus fast-food outlets. It is the practical choice when you are running to a schedule or travelling late.
Cafés in Yass: Worth the Short Detour
Yass itself is bypassed by the Hume, but the town centre is only a few minutes from the highway and is a much nicer place to stretch your legs. Comur Street, the main street, has several cafés for breakfast, coffee and lunch, including The Yass Café, Café Dolcetto and Thyme to Taste. Parking is easy, the streetscape is full of old stone buildings, and Cooma Cottage, once home to the explorer Hamilton Hume, is on the edge of town if you have time for a look.
Café hours in country towns can change with the season, so check before you plan a late lunch.
Heading North: Gunning
Driving towards Goulburn and Sydney, Gunning is a small village just off the highway that makes a relaxed alternative to the big service centres. The Merino Café at 62 Yass Street is known for homemade cakes, good coffee and a breakfast, brunch and lunch menu, with a children’s menu for families. It is the kind of stop that feels like a break rather than a refuel.
Heading South: Jugiong
South of Yass, Jugiong sits on the Murrumbidgee River a short loop off the Hume and has become one of the best-loved food stops on the whole Sydney to Melbourne drive. Long Track Pantry at 15 Riverside Drive is a café and providore with a seasonal menu built on local produce, baked goods, house-made preserves and take-home meals, plus a separate store for gelato and cold drinks. The historic Sir George hotel is in the same village if you would rather a pub meal.
Further South: Gundagai and the Dog on the Tuckerbox
About an hour from Binalong, the Dog on the Tuckerbox is one of the Hume’s best-known landmarks, just off the highway near Gundagai. The kiosk and farm shop there serves sandwiches, artisan pies, sausage rolls, baked goods and gelato made on site, and it opens seven days from 9am to 4pm. In Gundagai’s main street, the art deco Niagara Café is a famous old Greek café worth seeing in its own right.
