Cherry season turns the Hilltops into one of the busiest corners of country New South Wales. Pickers, families and day trippers all head for Young and the surrounding orchards from roughly November through January, and the first thing that gets tight is a bed for the night. If you have left your planning late, you already know the story: the town fills, rates climb, and the phone starts ringing out.
Motel Royal Tara sits in Binalong, a quiet village under an hour’s drive from Young. We are a 20-room country motel, not a big town property, and that suits plenty of cherry season visitors better than a room on a main street. Below is a straightforward look at when the season runs, how to avoid the crush around the festival, and what to expect from a stay with us.
When Cherry Season Runs Around Young
Cherry picking in the Young area generally runs from about November through to January. The exact window shifts from year to year because it depends on the varieties grown and on how the weather has treated the trees through spring. Some orchards open for picking earlier than others, and some finish sooner.
That variability matters when you are booking. A farm that was loaded with fruit one week might be picked out the next, and opening days are not always seven days a week. The safest approach is to ring the farm you plan to visit, or check with the Hilltops visitor information centre, before you commit to a long drive. Ask two questions: are you open on the day I am coming, and is there still fruit worth picking? Those two answers will save you a wasted trip.
Weekends are the busiest time in the orchards, particularly once the fruit is at its best. If your dates are flexible, a midweek visit gives you quieter roads, easier parking at the farm gate, and a better chance of a relaxed stay wherever you book.
The Festival Weekend Fills the District Fast
The National Cherry Festival in Young runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December, and it is the single biggest draw of the season. Growers, makers and cherry lovers gather in town, and accommodation across the district goes quickly.
Our rooms are already booked out from 3 to 6 December 2026, so we suggest planning your visit for the weeks either side. The orchards are still picking before and after the festival, the roads are noticeably quieter, and you get the same fruit with far less crowding.
A Quiet Country Base in Binalong
Binalong is a small village on the Burley Griffin Way, a short detour off the Hume Highway and about 30 minutes from Yass. From here it is under an hour’s drive to Young, which means you can spend the day in the orchards and the evening somewhere calm rather than in traffic.
We have 20 rooms and we have been here since 1986. All of them are ground floor and non-smoking, which makes a difference when you are unloading eskies, prams and picking buckets after a hot day.
Ground Floor Rooms With Parking at the Door

Every room comes with a private parking space right at the door. There is room for trailers, utes and work vehicles, so if you are travelling with a box trailer or towing gear, you are not squeezing into a shared car park or leaving equipment on the street.
Each room has an ensuite, reverse-cycle air conditioning, an electric blanket, WiFi, a TV, a kitchenette, tea and coffee making facilities, an iron, and daily housekeeping. Check-in is from 1 pm and check-out is 10 am. Full room details are on our Binalong accommodation page.
Family Rooms and Kitchenettes

Families do well here. Our family rooms have a queen bed plus two single beds and sleep four people. We also have triple, queen and twin rooms, so smaller groups and couples can pick something that fits rather than paying for space they will not use.
The kitchenettes are a practical touch during cherry season. You can keep fruit cool, make an early breakfast before heading out to a farm, and avoid eating every meal out. If you are travelling with kids who wilt in the heat, having a proper base with room to spread out makes the days far easier.
Dinner Without Driving Back Into Town

After a day in the sun, the last thing you want is another long drive for dinner. Our restaurant is licensed and BYO, and it serves dinner every day except Wednesday. The menu runs to steaks, burgers, pizza, and Indian curries and biryanis.
A buffet breakfast is also available from 7:30 to 9:30 am by booking, which suits anyone planning an early start at the orchards. You can see the full offering on our dining page.
Also Handy for Harden and Boorowa
Young is the headline act during cherry season, but it is not the only reason people pass through. Binalong works as a base for Harden and Boorowa as well, both short hops away. If your trip mixes orchard visits with a look around the smaller Hilltops towns, or with work in the area, staying in one place for several nights is simpler than moving around.
We also host plenty of guests on infrastructure projects in the area, so the motel is set up for people who need reliable parking, a decent meal at the end of the day and an early night.
How to Plan Your Cherry Season Stay
A few practical steps make the whole trip easier.
Book as early as you can. Peak season in the Hilltops is a demand-driven market, and the closer you get to a weekend in December, the fewer options remain.
Choose midweek if your schedule allows. Orchards, roads and restaurants are all calmer.
Confirm orchard opening days and picking conditions directly with the farm, or with the Hilltops visitor information centre, in the days before you travel.
Plan your meals around our Wednesday closure if you are staying midweek.
What to Check Before You Head to the Orchards
Cherry season is a working agricultural season, not a fixed tourist attraction. Conditions change quickly. Heat, rain and wind can all affect picking, and a farm that is open on Monday may be closed on Tuesday.
Ring ahead. Ask whether the orchard is open on your date, whether there is fruit available, and whether you need to bring your own containers. Those details vary between farms, so we do not quote them here. The Hilltops visitor information centre is a good starting point if you are not sure who to call.
Once you have your dates sorted, book your room. We are a small property and cherry season is one of our busiest stretches of the year, particularly on weekends either side of the festival.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is cherry season in Young?
Cherry season in the Young area runs roughly from November through January. The exact start and finish depend on the varieties grown and on the season’s weather, so it moves a little each year. Check with the individual orchards or the Hilltops visitor information centre for the current picking window before you plan your trip.
Should I stay in Young or somewhere nearby?
Both work. Young puts you close to town and the festival, but it fills quickly in season. A nearby base such as Binalong, under an hour’s drive from Young, gives you quieter nights, easier parking and lower demand, and it also puts Harden and Boorowa within easy reach. Book early either way.
Do your rooms suit families and work vehicles?
Yes. Our family rooms sleep four with a queen bed and two singles, and we also have triple, queen and twin rooms. Every room is ground floor with a private parking space at the door, and there is room for trailers, utes and work vehicles. Kitchenettes, air conditioning, WiFi and daily housekeeping are standard.
Can we get dinner at the motel?
You can. Our restaurant is licensed and BYO and serves dinner every day except Wednesday, with steaks, burgers, pizza, and Indian curries and biryanis. Buffet breakfast runs from 7:30 to 9:30 am by booking. It is a convenient option when you have spent the day in the orchards and do not want to drive again.
Cherry season around Young rewards a bit of forward planning. Lock in your dates, confirm your orchard before you travel, and give yourself a base that lets you slow down at the end of a long, dusty day. For best rates call or book us online from our website.
