Yass Valley has a wider spread of accommodation than most families expect. The area covers hotels and motels, country bed and breakfasts, historic homesteads, caravan parks and cabins, and the range of budgets on offer is just as broad. That choice is a good problem to have, but it does mean the word family gets used loosely in listings. A room labelled as family accommodation might sleep four people in real comfort, or it might sleep four only if two of them are small, flexible and happy to share.
The checks below are the ones worth making before you confirm a booking anywhere in the region. They are also the standards we have built our own rooms around, so we will use Motel Royal Tara as the working example throughout.
Confirm the Bed Configuration, Not Just the Guest Number
Ask how many beds there are, what size each one is, and who sleeps where. A queen bed plus two single beds is a straightforward layout for two adults and two children, because nobody has to share and nobody ends up on a fold-out. Our Family room is set up exactly that way, with a queen bed and two single beds, and it sleeps four.
Other configurations suit other groups. We also offer Triple, Queen and Twin rooms, which helps when grandparents travel with you, when one parent arrives a day earlier, or when the children are old enough to want their own space next door. The aim is to match the room to the actual group rather than to a generic label.
Two more questions are worth asking at the booking stage. Are all the beds made up and ready, or does one need to be prepared on arrival? And is a cot or extra bedding available if a baby is travelling with you? Properties answer those questions differently, so get the answer before you commit.
Check Whether the Rooms Are on the Ground Floor

Stairs are the quiet enemy of a family trip. They are manageable at 3 pm with one suitcase. They are far less manageable at 8 pm with a sleeping toddler, a pram, a portacot, a nappy bag and a cooler full of food.
All 20 rooms at Motel Royal Tara are on the ground floor, which means no stairs, no lift queues and no carrying children up a flight of steps at the end of a long drive. Each room opens onto its own front patio area, giving the family somewhere to sit outside, dry wet swimmers or let the kids stretch their legs within sight of the door.
When comparing options, ask directly whether the family room is upstairs or downstairs. A cheaper room on the first floor can cost more in effort than it saves.
Look at Parking Before You Look at Anything Else

Every room here comes with a private parking space at the door. Families who travel with a trailer, a boat, a ute or a work vehicle often find that parking is the detail that decides a stay, and our bays are set up to handle trailers and larger vehicles rather than sedans only.
Parking at the door matters for practical reasons. You can unload without leaving the car unattended, you can move a sleeping child straight into bed, and you can pack up in the morning without crossing a car park with luggage. It also matters for anyone travelling with tools or equipment that should not be left out overnight.
If you are booking elsewhere, ask whether parking is allocated per room, whether it is under cover, and whether larger vehicles can be accommodated without blocking someone in.
In-Room Facilities That Earn Their Keep

A family room needs to do more than sleep four people. Over a night or two, the small things add up quickly. Every room at Motel Royal Tara includes:
-
An ensuite bathroom, so nobody is queuing for a shared facility
-
Reverse-cycle air conditioning for hot afternoons and cold mornings
-
An electric blanket on the bed for winter nights
-
WiFi and a TV for the evening wind-down
-
A kitchenette with tea and coffee making facilities for snacks, milk and late bottles
-
An iron for anyone who needs to look presentable at a family event
-
Daily housekeeping, so the room is reset without you doing it
All rooms are non-smoking. If you are comparing properties, ask whether the room has a kitchenette or only a kettle, whether the air conditioning is reverse cycle or cooling only, and whether housekeeping is daily or on request. Those three answers tell you a lot about how a place is set up for families.
Work Out Meal Plans Before You Arrive
Hungry children and a long drive are a poor combination, which is the argument for staying somewhere you can eat without getting back in the car. Our licensed and BYO restaurant serves steaks, burgers, pizza, and Indian curries and biryanis. Dinner is available every day except Wednesday, and a buffet breakfast runs from 7:30 to 9:30 am by booking. Full details are on the dining page.
The BYO option is worth knowing about. If you would rather bring your own wine to dinner, that works here, and it can ease a family budget on a longer trip.
If you expect to arrive late, ring ahead so a meal can be sorted before you reach Binalong. Travelling with a plan for dinner is much easier than hunting for food with tired kids in the back seat.
Know the Check-In and Check-Out Times
Check-in at Motel Royal Tara starts at 1 pm and check-out is 10 am. Those windows suit families who want to arrive in the afternoon, unpack, eat and get everyone to bed at a reasonable hour.
If your plans run later than expected, ring ahead. Arriving with the phone number saved and a rough time of arrival makes evening check-in much smoother, particularly if the Hume Highway is slow.
We can be reached on 02 6227 4310 or 0426 428 501 on WhatsApp, and booking details are on our contact page.
Decide Whether You Want Yass Itself or a Short Detour
Yass is the obvious search term and there is plenty to do in the town and around the valley. A short detour can work just as well, particularly if you would prefer a quieter night. Motel Royal Tara is at 27 Stephens Street, Binalong NSW 2584, about 30 minutes from Yass on the Burley Griffin Way and a short detour off the Hume Highway. The motel has been running since 1986.
Staying slightly outside Yass means less traffic noise, easier parking and a country setting, while still being close enough for a day trip into town or further afield. Our accommodation near Yass page covers the drive and what is nearby, and the things to do page has ideas for filling a day with children.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many people can a family room near Yass sleep?
Family rooms in the region usually sleep four people, and that is the case here. Our Family room has a queen bed and two single beds, which suits two adults and two children without anyone sharing. For a larger group, a Triple, Queen or Twin room can be booked alongside it. Always confirm the bed setup directly with the property, because the term family room is used differently from one place to the next.
Do family rooms near Yass have parking for trailers and larger vehicles?
Parking varies between properties, so it is worth asking before you book. At Motel Royal Tara every room has a private parking space at the door, and the bays can take trailers, utes and work vehicles as well as standard cars. That makes unloading easier and means luggage or equipment does not have to be carried across a car park.
Can we get dinner without leaving the motel?
Yes. Our licensed and BYO restaurant serves steaks, burgers, pizza, and Indian curries and biryanis, with dinner available every day except Wednesday. A buffet breakfast runs from 7:30 to 9:30 am by booking. If you expect to arrive late, ring ahead on 02 6227 4310 or 0426 428 501 so a meal can be organised before you arrive.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in starts at 1 pm and check-out is 10 am. Those times work well for families who want to arrive in the afternoon, settle in and eat before an early night. If the drive is running late, call ahead so the room can be held and arrival arrangements can be made.
Are the rooms ground floor?
All 20 rooms at Motel Royal Tara are on the ground floor, so there are no stairs to manage with prams, portacots or sleeping children. Each room opens onto its own front patio area, giving families somewhere to sit outside or let the kids move around within sight of the door. Ground floor access is one of the first things to confirm when comparing family accommodation.
